Bosch turns his critical gaze toward people who pretend to possess special knowledge but actually exploit others. The work can be understood as a warning against false healers, fraudulent authorities, and the willingness to blindly trust dubious promises.
The other figures and details also contribute to its symbolic effect. The alleged doctor’s unusual headwear and the mysterious objects refer to the world of folly and human self-deception.
